Show Black Anodizing
It's the details that make the difference.
The owner of Johnston Competition, Mike Johnston, knows metal and metal finishing processes. Before starting his own custom fabrication shop, Mike worked as an engineer for NASA - building and testing the most expensive custom vehicles on the planet (or should we say Universe?). He takes that experience, and applies it to the cars he builds for his customers. Over the last year, we have been working with Mike on one of his ultra-trick, totally hand fabricated Super Comp dragsters. When he dropped off the last batch of parts, we thought that the relatively simple rear wing components would be a great example of how to make anodized aluminum perfect. Since Mike has extensive metal finishing experience, he typically tells us exactly what he wants. For this particular project, he has requested that both sides of all 3 of the aluminum wing components be buffed to a mirror finish, "bright-dipped", then gloss black anodized. Typically, customers do not want the added expense of bright dipping after buffing. But, Mike swears (and we agree with him) that the additional step makes the black anodizing a little more vibrant. The photos of the wing struts are to show you how we buffed the parts prior to anodizing - you are going to have to wait for a shot of the completed assembly, installed on the car to fully appreciate the beauty of the finished parts. More photos to come....
